The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has reverberated around the globe and the world of sport has been no exception to the disruption.

In line with a number of other sporting cancellations, the BHA took the decision to abandon all racing until the end of April.

However, in these challenging times, a seven race card across the Irish Sea will provide racing fans with an escapist respite on Saturday.

Thurles plays host and, in the opener, hot-favourite Politesse will represent Lorna Fowler. Based in County Meath and with 8 horses in training, yards like Fowler’s are the lifeblood of Irish racing.

“Obviously it has been a very, very trying time for everybody. Our small community, which is racing, is very important and a lot of people’s jobs rely on it.”

14,000 jobs are created by racing in Ireland, so the decision to continue will be welcomed by many, albeit with strict restrictions imposed.

“It’s important we keep people’s jobs going and it includes things like supplying hay, food, bedding for the horses, so let’s hope it can just keep going for as long as is sensible.”

Her sole runner on the card is Politesse, who will make her debut over hurdles.

“She’s done lots of schooling and absolutely loves her jumping and she actually did a lot last year too. I think even when you know you’re just going to run them over bumpers to start with, jumping is a great education for them. Conor Orr who will ride her has done a lot of work with her.”

The half-sister to Don Poli will generate lots of interest after posting some very strong performances in bumpers. On debut she finished under four lengths behind subsequent Cheltenham winner Monkfish.

“She finished behind Longhouse Poet and Monkfish on debut last year before finishing second in a Grade 2 and then winning at Thurles. Obviously I’m happy to go back to Thurles with her having won there already.

“She hasn’t run over hurdles before, so she has a little inexperience to overcome, but she loves her jumping and let’s hope she can give us a nice show on Saturday.”
