The much-anticipated highlight of the summer jumps season, the Betway Summer Plate Raceday, takes place this Saturday, 17th July at Market Rasen Racecourse and the 12-times champion trainer, Paul Nicholls, returns to the Lincolnshire track with two well-fancied contenders for top racehorse syndicators Old Gold Racing.

The highly competitive seven-race card is headlined by the listed Betway Summer Plate Handicap Chase run over 2m5f.  Broadcast live on ITV Racing, Nicholls will saddle Old Gold Racing’s prodigy Darling Maltaix in the 2:40pm contest.  Heading to the track with a first time-out seasonal win already under his girth, Darling’s Newton Abbot victory is predicted to have put him spot on for this more prestigious contest.

Trainer, Paul Nicholls says:

“We schooled Darling Maltaix this morning (Thursday) ahead of Saturday’s Summer Plate.  He’s been trained for this race and I’m very happy with his prep – his run and win at Newton Abbot last month has really tightened him up.

“Saturday’s one of the toughest races he’s ever run in and it promises to be a competitive contest, but Darling’s ready for it. He looks brilliant in his skin, he’s fit, he’s relaxed and he’s working well - there’s lots of little crumbs to make a cake!”

A new horse to the Old Gold Racing family is the progressive seven-year-old Saint De Reve - declared for the 3:50pm Betway (Novices’ Limited Handicap) Chase.  Jockey Harry Cobden will be adhering to his trainer’s strategy.

“Saint De Reve also schooled this morning (Thursday) and is in great shape.  It will be his first run for Old Gold Racing, having already won at Chepstow in the spring.  Saturday’s small field will suit him nicely and I’m hopeful for a good run.  He’s a forward going horse so Harry will have him handy throughout the race”, says Paul.

Ed Seyfried, Chief Executive of Old Gold Racing, added: “The anticipation and levels of excitement are fever pitch at Old Gold Racing headquarters!  To be journeying to Market Rasen as an owner with a leading contender in the Betway Summer Plate is so special.

“Darling Maltaix was purchased and syndicated amidst the bleakness of the first lockdown when there was no racing and everything seemed dark and unknown.  But, ‘Darling’ burned hope into the hearts of his 1,500 new owners, and when racing resumed later in 2020, he broke the course record at Stratford before recording an astonishing 52 lengths victory at Ludlow.  He’s already started his season in style winning first time out after a flawless round of jumping at Newton Abbot on the 22nd June.

“Paul won his first Summer Plate Chase back in 2001 with Dorans Gold – here’s hoping that twenty years later he can win the feature race for Old Gold Racing!

“Our latest recruit, Saint De Reve, is a prominent-running gelding who benefits from a competitive ride towards the front of the field.  To date, he has amassed £21,000 in prize-money on his route to becoming a successful novice chaser and we hope that he will continue to contribute to that pot.”
