Bro Park’s early April meeting kicks off the thoroughbred season in Sweden, with weekly cards throughout the warmer months showcasing the best action in Scandinavia.
As well as the finest equine talent in the country, it’s worth keeping an eye out for certain trainers and jockeys throughout the coming months.
Here are a handful of Swedish racing personalities to take note of.
Top Swedish trainers
Lennart Reuterskiöld Jr
A multiple champion trainer in Sweden, this 51-year-old has an excellent strike rate, especially when it counts the most - in the classics and in the black type races.
He and wife Linda are based at Jägersro racetrack in the south of Sweden but they have had consistent success in the best races all over Scandinavia.
Roy Arne Kvisla
Born in Norway, but based at Bro Park Racecourse just outside Stockholm, Kvisla is a quiet man who lets his results do the talking.
Even saying that - this guy does a lot of talking! Mr Kvisla is known to always have his horses fit and in great shape when it’s time to run.
She has only been a trainer for two years but Berneklint hasracing in her genes. She was champion jockey in Sweden in the mid 90’s and was then assistant trainer to former husband Fredrik Reuterskiöld until 2017.
Susanne, who is based at Jägersro has a small but impressive string of horses, with an excellent strike rate. The most successful horses in her team are the duo I Kirk and Plata O Plomo who have both won races in Dubai in the last two seasons.
Top 4 Swedish racing jockeys
This 36-year old Brazil native is based at Jägersro but is riding all over Scandinavia - with massive success. During the winter this flamboyant jockey rides all over the globe, but mainly in Dubai where he picks up winners for a number of trainers.
Elione has massive respect from his colleagues – he is a star in Sweden, it’s as simple as that!
A multiple champion jockey in Scandinavia, Lopez was born in Chile, but has ridden in Sweden for the last eight years.
Similar to the likes of Frankie Dettori in the UK, come the big days there are fewer jockeys you’d rather have in the saddle than Carlos.
One of the most experienced and hard working in Scandinavia - Per-Anders rarely fails to deliver!
The 46-year-old top jockey is based at Bro Park in Stockholm and has a countless number of classic winners. He has won The Stockholm Cup International (Gr3) on four occasions and one must be impressed with his exceptional work ethic.
Only at the beginning of her career, but rest assured - Holmqvist is going places. In her second year as a jockey she rode her first Classic winner in the 2000 Guineas at Bro Park.
But more impressive still was her four timer last year at the one day meeting "Nationaldagsgaloppen" in front of 50,000 screaming fans in the city of Stockholm.
Keep your eyes peeled for Holmqvist and all the other jockeys and trainers named above at Tote.co.uk, with Swedish racing streamed live every day.
