After a considerable amount of money was spent on the racecourse proper and the development of 140 stables, the name was changed from Kimberley to Flamingo Park. The weather in Kimberley only reaches lows of 20%, hence the notably red colour of the sand. There are lows of 20 degrees in June and July, then highs of 35 in December and January.
Flamingo Park is famous for making course specialists. Even those who have never managed to achieve anything on the grass can perform at the highest level at Flamingo. The draw is extremely important to the chances of a racehorse at Flamingo. The higher the draw, the more chance you have over shorter distances on the straight track. The lower, the better over longer distances.
