Racecards
Renwick
Racecard

Brotherly Company has a good record here under both codes, but his comeback run left a lot to be desired at Perth and he looks short enough in the betting. Renwick is slowly recapturing some form again now under the tutelage of Philip Hobbs. He finished second at Uttoxeter last time out and travelled best of all into the race but was just unable to go with the winner over the last. He jumped well that day and was rated 118 over hurdles, so you would like to think he’s well treated off 110 in this sphere.

Atlantic Storm
Racecard

On paper, Rob Summers 9yo has a little bit to find with Tardree on a formline through Larch Hill but he’s in good form and gets a fair bit of weight. He was better value than his half-length success at Stratford last time, with Charlie Hammond pulling him up a bit close to home, and therefore a 4lb rise looks fair enough. He won over course and distance here off 111 in 2018 and on his only other start at the track, ran into the frame after being sent off at 33/1. He’s a horse who enjoys the sun on his back and looks good value to score a double.

Awesomedude
Racecard

This one made an encouraging start to his hurdling career at Market Rasen last time, being pitched in a decent enough contest at Market Rasen for his debut. By Derby winner Australia, he racked up a five-timer on the Flat for James Ferguson before joining David Pipe and showed a good attitude on his first appearance after the best part of a year off the track. His jumping was a little bit iffy at times, so you would hope the yard has been working on that at home, and if he can gain a little more fluency at his obstacles, he should be able to win a few races.

Calvinist
Racecard

Calvinist badly needed the run at Hexham last time out and any chance of getting competitive were scuppered by how keen he was to get on with things. He ran well at this track last year, finishing third and fourth on his two starts at the track and looks a good each-way bet. His placed effort here came off today’s mark, so if it’s a going day, he could well run into a place here. Brian Hughes is a really positive jockey booking.

About Southwell Racecourse

The only fibre sand track in the country, Southwell has been home to a number of course specialists over the years. The likes of La Estrella, Stand Guard and General Tufto have all racked up the wins at the Nottinghamshire track over the years.

In addition to the left-handed all-weather track, Southwell also boasts a jumps course which is a real test of jumping throughout the summer months in it’s chases, but allows the odd mistake over it’s fixed brush hurdles.
