About Turffontein Racecourse

The scene of many of South African racing’s most iconic duels, Turffontein’s beginnings have the city of Johannesburg's gold rush to thank. Formed in 1887, to satisfy the love of racing for the city’s new wealthy settlers, the course has become not only a major track but one of the country’s main training centres.

Venue for the South African Derby and the Summer Cup each November, contests on Turffontein’s round course are regarded as true tests of stamina, with the climb from 1200m out to the final turn often catching non-stayers out later on in the race.
